TACLOBAN CITY – To highlight the collaborative spirit of the fishing community and its role in promoting sustainable fishing practices, the local government of Palompon in Leyte held the first-ever offshore jigging tournament at the famous Kalanggaman Island in Palompon on Sunday, April 28.
In collaboration with the Palompon Anglers Club, a total of 50 local and international anglers competed in the community-based sports tourism and marine conservation initiative.

FIFTY local and international anglers competed in the first-ever offshore jigging tournament at the famous Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte on Sunday, April 28.
Mayor Ramon Oñate said the day was full of intense fishing action in the pristine waters surrounding the island outside the island’s buoy.
Members of different angler clubs and organizations, including boat operators, were seen casting their jigs hoping to snag the biggest catch.
"The exciting day was filled with friendly competition and camaraderie. Anglers targeted a variety of species known to thrive in the area, including the blacksail snake mackerel, barracuda, and cubera snapper," Oñate said.
He said that the flow of the tournament’s activities was ideal because of clear skies and calms seas, resulting in perfect fishing conditions on the island.
Daniel Cañas from Ormoc City Anglers Club won first place, Jeffrey Delda from Biliran Anglers Club was second, and Daniel Ancot from Northern Cebu Anglers Club bagged third. Winners received a plaque, certificate of recognition, and cash.
The local government unit of Palompon lauded winners and participants. "Their participation has not only marked the beginning of more such exciting tournaments in the future but also establishes Kalanggaman Island as one of the top destinations for sports fishing enthusiasts across the country," it said.
