House Deputy Minority Leader and Basilan lone district Rep. Mujiv Hataman says he is delighted over President Marcos’ pronouncement that the 2025 elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) will push through as scheduled.
“Malinaw na malinaw ang sinabi ni Pangulong Marcos: tuloy na tuloy na ang BARMM elections sa susunod na taon (President Marcos made it very clear: the BARMM elections will continue next year). His statement left no room for ambiguity,” Hataman said in a statement on Monday, April 29.
“The people of the Bangsamoro will get an opportunity to exercise their democratic rights under the Constitution and under the Bangsamoro Organic Law,” he added.
During the commemoration ceremony for the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) held in Barira, Maguindanao del Norte, President Marcos assured locals that BARMM will have peaceful elections come May 2025.
In his speech, Marcos reminded the Bangsamoro people to exercise their democratic right to suffrage to further realize and achieve a meaningful autonomy.
“Natutuwa tayo na kinikilala ng Pangulo ang karapatan ng mga taga-Bangsamoro region na pumili kung sino ang mamumuno sa kanila. Napakahalaga sa puntong ito sa kasaysayan ng BARMM,” said Hataman.
(We are glad that the President recognizes the right of the people of the Bangsamoro region to choose who will lead them. This point in the history of BARMM is very important.)
“This is the culmination of the people’s right to self-determination and self-governance that many fought for,” he underscored.
Hataman stressed that the time has now come for BARMM to elect their own set of leaders.
“Panahon na para ang mamamayan ang sumulat ng kanilang kasaysayan. Walang tunay na demokrasya kung wala sa kamay ng mamamayan ang pagpili ng kanilang mga pinuno,” the lawmaker said.
(It's time for the people to write their history. There is no real democracy if the choice of their leaders is not in the hands of the people.)
“Ang Bangsamoro ay para sa Bangsamoro, hindi lamang para sa iilan,” he added.
(The Bangsamoro is for Bangsamoro, not just for the few.)
Originally scheduled in 2022 under the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), the BARMM elections was moved to 2025 through an amendment in the law during the 18th Congress.
This reschedule extended the term of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) officials for another three years.
