The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has detected a Chinese-flagged research vessel off the waters of Viga, Catanduanes, which is located at the opposite side of the West Philippine Sea.

In a statement, the AFP said there were attempts to contact the vessel through regular radio channels but the personnel of the Chinese-flagged research vessel Shen Kuo, did not respond.

The lack of response during the contact attempts, the military said, was an indication of either lack of responsiveness or unwillingness to communicate.

“The AFP remains vigilant, monitoring any unauthorized research vessel in our maritime domain. We have already tasked nearby vessels for enhanced surveillance and reporting,” the AFP said in a statement.

Based on the military report, the foreign research vessel was spotted on April 25 some 60.9 nautical miles east off Rapu-Rapu Island, Albay.

“Per latest reports from Tactical Operations Wing, Southern Luzon (TOWSOL) which conducted maritime patrol (MARPAT) on April 27, it was observed that the vessel was lying in the area and had no personnel on the main deck,” it said.

“Additionally, the AFP is coordinating with relevant agencies to address the unauthorized presence and investigate any illegal activities within our EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone), ensuring the security and protection of our waters,” it added.
