Brawner wants territorial defense training for Army reservists

Gen. Romeo Brawner, Jr., chief staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), wants all Army reservists to be trained on territorial defense amid the shift in geopolitical dynamics that includes the tension in the West Philippine Sea.

During a turnover ceremony of the leadership of the 103rd (La Union) Ready Reserve Infantry Battalion (103rd RRIBn), Brawner said there is a need for the training of reservists amid what the AFP statement described as “in light of the current threats faced by the nation.”

“I am challenging Major General (Romulo) Manuel to prepare the Army Reserve Force for territorial defense, as they will play an important role as part of the total force in case of national emergencies,” said Brawner in his speech.

Manuel is the commanding general of the Philippine Army Reserve Command.

Calls for mandatory Reserve Officer Candidate Training Corps) started a few years ago amid the tension in the West Philippine Sea that includes dangerous maneuvers and use of water cannons on Philippine vessels.

On the part of the police’s elite Special Action Force, its director, Police Maj. Gen. Bernard Banac, has also initiated training programs aligned to territorial defense for SAF commandos.

The SAF also sent its largest contingent to this year’s Balikatan exercises.

In the same activity that happened on April 27 in La Union, Bawner cited the important role of military reservists in internal security, particularly the 103rd (La Union) Ready Reserve Infantry Battalion (103rd RRIBn), which he said, successfully fostered partnerships through stakeholder engagements,

“Additionally, the battalion played a pivotal role in community outreach efforts and national security through distribution of relief goods and active involvement of reserve forces in joint military exercises, enhancing interoperability and readiness within the AFP,” said Brawner. 

The change of leadership for the the 103rd (La Union) Ready Reserve Infantry Battalion (103rd RRIBn) was between outgoing Acting Battalion Commander Colonel Ramon F Laudencia MNSA PA (Res) and incoming Acting Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Emmanuel R Ortega III, PA (Res).
