A champion of maritime safety and the environment.

That's how Binan City lone district Rep. Marlyn "Len" Alonte described the late Cavite 4th district Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., who passed away Saturday, April 27 much to the sadness of House members.

"Whenever a tragic maritime tragedy happens, House Committee on Natural Resources Chair, Congressman Elpidio Barzaga Jr., was there to pick up the cudgels for the victims," Alonte said in a statement Sunday, April 28.

"He knew maritime safety, disaster preparedness, and environmental issues well. He, therefore, supported  the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers. He was a principal sponsor of the proposed PENCAS Act on accounting for the value of natural resources," said the lady solon.

PENCAS stands for Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Capital Accounting System.
