CHR supports DOJ's efforts vs extra-judicial killings, human rights violations

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) assured its full support to the Department of Justice's (DOJ) commitment to combat extra-judicial killings (EJKs) and other forms of human rights violations in the country.

It also supported the crucial steps the DOJ committed to strengthen the criminal justice system and to ensure accountability for perpetrators of human rights violations.

Since the United States Department of State recognized EJKs as a “major concern” in the Philippines, the CHR -- in a statement -- found it “encouraging” how the DOJ reacted to it by implementing reforms that will alter the attitudes and behavior of law enforcement personnel.

“Ensuring adherence to the rule of law and advancing human rights are foundational principles that should underpin every facet of governance,” the CHR pointed out.

“We are hopeful that these pronouncements will translate to concrete results, including increase in the number of resolved cases of human rights violations,” it said.

With these positive steps, the CHR said it is is looking forward to seeing more progress and actions taken up for the banner of human rights especially for the disadvantaged sectors.

“The CHR remains steadfast in its mandate to monitor, investigate, and advocate for the protection of human rights. We stand ready to collaborate with the DOJ and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that human rights are upheld, and justice is served for all,” it assured.
