DepEd: No teacher died of heat stroke in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY – The Department of Education denied reports that two teachers recently died of heat stroke in Santa Barbara town, Iloilo province.

The DepEd called the report by Iloilo-based XFM Radyo Patrol Iloilo as “highly inaccurate and misleading.”

The radio station reported on Tuesday, April 23, that two teachers died from heat stroke in school. The Facebook post of XFM Radyo Patrol gained traction and became viral by Tuesday night.

The DepEd-Division of Iloilo said no teacher died while teaching at school despite the extreme heat that has affected Iloilo and the rest of Panay Island since late last month.

“Based on our official records, one of our teachers in Santa Barbara passed away last February 2024 due to hypertensive cardiovascular disease while another teacher passed away sometime in March 2024 due to aneurysm,” it said in an official statement.

“It is unfortunate that certain news outlets resort to sensationalizing the death of our teachers at the expense of true and factual reporting,” DepEd added.

Both teachers reportedly died at home and not in school.

Not only XFM Radyo Patrol Iloilo reported the incident but also other Iloilo-based news outlets.
