A closed van owned by a barangay councilor was heavily damaged, while a construction worker was injured after steel bars fell from the 40th floor of a building under construction on Recto Avenue in Manila on Wednesday morning, April 24.

Manila Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) identified the injured victim as Bryan Alipa, a worker of T1 China construction company.

Rescuers said the victim sustained multiple abrasions after being hit by falling debris. He was immediately brought to Manila Medical Center.

According to safety officer on duty, Alverto Po, the incident occurred at Aguilar Street corner Recto Avenue around 6:05 a.m. when the steel bars lifted by a tower crane from the 40th floor of a building suddenly fell.

He said it also caused some parts of the scaffolding to fall.

Meanwhile, a closed van parked in front of the construction building was heavily damaged due to the fallen steel bars.

Barangay Chairman Wilsen Yu said the construction company will compensate the damages brought to the affected vehicle owned by Barangay Councilor Marrisa Sabado.

Authorities advised the public to be cautious when passing by buildings under construction because they may be hit by falling debris.
