Philippines commits to UN global system in developing quality jobs

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has expressed its commitment to the UN’s Global Accelerator program in helping facilitate equitable transitions towards meeting the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The Global Accelerator initiative by the United Nations aims to promote a job-intensive economic revival and enhance social safety nets, with the Philippines participating as one of the 15 pioneer nations.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said the interest received from the Philippines underscores the alignment between the objectives of the Global Accelerator and the country's development frameworks, specifically the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) and the Philippine Labor and Employment Plan (PLEP) for the period of 2023–2028.

Laguesma said these frameworks have been strengthened by the Trabaho Para sa Bayan (TPB) Plan, whose inter-agency council will serve as the national steering committee for the implementation of the Global Accelerator's roadmaps.

"These underscore as a priority the creation of employment opportunities, and that is where support from the new initiative will be crucial,” he said on behalf of the SDC," said Laguesma.

The Global Accelerator is committed to assisting pioneer countries such as the Philippines in harmonizing national policies, addressing discrepancies, and directing funds towards social initiatives.

It is intended to rectify gaps in coverage and financing for universal social protection, promote the creation of quality job opportunities, shield communities from climate change and other hazards, and support fair transitions, primarily within the construction and transportation industries.
