Six-month partial closure of EDSA Kamuning flyover starts May 1; MMDA identifies alternate routes
Starting May 1, the southbound portion of the EDSA-Kamuning flyover in Quezon City will be partially closed to pave the way to its rehabilitation, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Monday, April 22.
MMDA acting chairman Don Artes said the rehabilitation of the EDSA-Kamuning flyover will be done for at least six months and the same time period will be implemented for the partial closure of its access to motorists.
“Even though the flyover will be partially closed during the rehabilitation, it will still be passable to public utility buses on the EDSA bus carousel,” Artes said in a press briefing after his meeting with representatives from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
During the meeting, DPWH officials said the by-phase retrofitting of the EDSA Kamuning flyover southbound will start on April 25 as part of the measures to strengthen the bridge.
In the past meeting, DPWH officials said the rehabilitation is necessary to avoid further damage and as preventive measures against natural disasters like earthquakes, adding that it is a significant step in the government's efforts to rehabilitate structures in preparation for "The Big One” in case it happens.
Artes said the MMDA will also study whether emergency vehicles can be allowed to use the busway in the flyover on a case-to-case basis.
But prior to the start of the partial closure, Artes said they will be conducting intensified clearing operations in the vicinity to ensure unobstructed alternate routes.
"As necessary, the agency will conduct clearing operations to remove any road obstructions, including illegally parked vehicles, to ensure alternative routes are all accessible to vehicles. Aside from that, the DPWH has prepared a list of alternate routes and will strategically install directional traffic signs to guide affected motorists. We will also allocate traffic marshals," said Artes.

As part of the measures to assist motorists who will be affected, the MMDA has identified several alternate routes during the span of the partial closure:

The EDSA-Kamuning flyover is expected to fully open to vehicular traffic on October 25.
