REDC to build seawater pumped storage hydropower plant in Quezon

Repower Energy Development Corp. (REDC) said it plan to construct the country's first seawater pump storage hydropower facility in Real, Quezon after being granted a Hydropower Service Contract from the Department of Energy (DOE).

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the subsidiary of Pure Energy Holdings Corp. said it will build the 320 megawatt (MW) hydropower facility under a memorandum of agreement with Austrian firm Gugler Water Turbines GMBH (Gugler), whereas the joint agreement will have its first project within Luzon.

REDC President and Chief Executive Officer Eric Peter Roxas said this development would make history, stating that “the seawater pumped storage hydropower facility in Real, Quezon shall be the first of its kind in the Philippines, thus allowing the company to be a pioneering force in this particular area of clean energy.”

The facility will be constructed around 300 meters above sea level, while the lower reservoir will use the coastline for unlimited intake of seawater, and Repower will fund the pre-feasibility and initial activities using internally generated funds.

While this may be the first to source energy from seawater in the country, the first-ever pumped-hydro storage system in the world utilizes the Philippine sea for its lower reservoir. The facility is located on the northern coast of Okinawa, Japan.
