RUNRIO, Samsung partnership puts premium on eco-conscious marathon event

RUNRIO Inc. and Samsung Galaxy launched its maiden partnership for the returning the Earth Day Run with focus on decreasing carbon footprint during marathon events. 

The running organization has been holding Earth Day Run since 2010 with its commitment leaning on sustainable efforts. 

“I’ve been organizing the Earth Day Run long before. But this is our first time partnering with Samsung. I am very happy [for their sponsorship] and am also [proud to be] one of the brand’s ambassadors,” said Dela Cruz, Founder and CEO of RUNRIO and Board of Director for the Sydney Marathon on top of being University of the Philippines' Track & Field head coach. 

“I’m happy that Samsung is happy with the turnout. Actually, three times na-sold ‘yung event natin [due to demand],” he added. 

In 2010, Earth Day Run was a three-leg event with then sponsor National Geographic Channel. 

The electronic giant then took on the title sponsorship this year with long-term partnership in mind. 

For this event, runners were highly encouraged to bring their own water bottles or some sort of hydration fuel as there would be no single use plastic bottles and paper cups given in the drinking stations. 

Initially, the target participants were only 5,000 but it grew double in size with demands for more slots as the event went beyond its expected goal. 

“We were only targeting 5,000. Then maraming demand. It sold out quickly. Then we went for 10,000. Pero beyond that hindi na talaga kaya kasi we have to produce the medal, finisher’s shirts, and singlet and loot bags. So ‘yung timeframe hindi kinaya,” said Dela Cruz. 

RUNRIO also joined hands with Tzu Chi Foundation to make sure the objective takes its full effect. 

All recyclable materials will be donated to the Taiwanese humanitarian non-governmental organization, which will then be turned into usable products. 

“We are very excited for this partnership. It’s our first time to do it. It’s definitely something we want to do again. I think for Samsung, we are very much into sustainability. Even in the products we release, we’ve taken that step,” said Jelina King, Ecosystem Category Head, Samsung Philippines. 

Next year, RUNRIO is planning to expand the environment conscious running event beyond Metro Manila with simultaneous races happening in different provinces as well as increase its number of participants.
