Marcio Lassiter not only provided the much-needed boost for San Miguel against the upset-minded Converge in the second of half of its 112-103 win but his five triples also allowed him to close in on James Yap’s place in the all-time three-point ladder.

Lassiter, after missing all of his four shots from deep in the first half, came alive and became the Beermen’s zone buster that broke the floodgates for their 51-point third quarter explosion.
He went on to finish with 19 points – all in the second half – highlighted by five triples that had him one trey shy of tying Blackwater’s Yap in No.4 in the all-time three-point shooting list.
Yap currently has 1,194 triples and counting to his name just behind No. 3 and LA Tenorio who has 1,218 triples and counting. Only two players in the Top 5 are not anymore on active duty with Allan Caidic placing second with 1,242 and Jimmy Alapag drilling the most treys with 1,250 triples.
More than the records, however, Lassiter was glad to simply stretch the floor and open up the defense for SMB which struggled against the pressing zone defense of Converge in the first two quarters.
“Coach gave me a talk and said ‘hey you gotta take these shots because it’s not helping our team to stretch the floor’. So that what I did. I’m always confident of my shot, just had to get it going, wake up and that's what kinda I did,” said Lassiter.
The halftime peptalk certainly did wonders not only for Lassiter but also for the rest of the team as they never looked back after they recovered from a 12-point first half deficit.
“I told Marcio, Don (Trollano) and Terrence (Romeo) to not be hesitant, for us to break that zone, we have to click (from outside), for Converge to change their defense,” said SMB head coach Jorge Gallent.
“When Marcio and the shooters were making their shots, they changed their zone and now it was the time for June Mar (Fajardo) to pick up his game which happened,” he added.
Lassiter is needing two more triples in San Miguel’s game against NorthPort on Sunday to formally leapfrog Yap in the standings.
