Marcos eyes 1 million digital jobs by 2028

Marcos said this following his meeting with the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) in Malacañan on Friday, April 19, to discuss updates and their recommendations concerning the Digital Infrastructure Work Plans.

In a Facebook post, the President said the government was working with the PSAC to achieve its goal of creating a million digital jobs.

"We're on a mission to create 1 million digital jobs by 2028, potentially bringing in PhP24 billion to fund various public services and infrastructure projects," he wrote.

"With PSAC, we're aligning training programs with market demands, preparing our workforce, and opening doors to digital innovation and economic growth in the country," he added.

According to Malacañang, among the issues discussed during the meeting were the Connectivity Index Rating, the National Cybersecurity Plan, and the Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) Protection Executive. These would accelerate the National ID rollout through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

The PSAC also discussed improving internet connectivity by mandating the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-accredited tower companies for last-mile telco infrastructure, boosting tower-sharing and fiber builds to enhance network efficiency, and allocating P608 billion annually for DICT to facilitate internet access for 125,000 public facilities.

It also suggested strengthening regulatory policies to promote telecom sustainability to create a million digital jobs by 2028 through collaborative efforts of government agencies, particularly the Office of the President, DICT, and the private sector. This would equip the workforce with essential competencies for the digital era.

Furthermore, the PSAC recommended allocating P608 billion annually to fund internet connectivity in public facilities and improving and implementing identified key issues. It likewise asked the President to instruct all pertinent agencies, jointly led by the DICT and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), to coordinate in executing all training and job promotion activities towards the goal of one million digital jobs.

For his part, President Marcos reiterated the need for the PSAC to work closely with concerned agencies. He added that the implementation of the said plans should be clear and worthwhile.
