'Unpaid' taxes of UP to be deducted from job order workers' salary
Council committee expresses dissent
The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman University Council Committee on Faculty Development, Conduct, and Welfare expressed dismay over the threats against the welfare of the job order or contract of service (JO/CoS) workers, as “unpaid” taxes of the university will be deducted to their salary.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 2, the committee said an average of P38,000 per individual with some amounting to as much as P60,000 aside from the regular tax deductions will be collected from active 210 personnel for a total of P8.2 million worth of taxes for 2023.
The committee said the personnel were informed by UPD in early March that the university had not followed tax rules to withhold its expanded withholding tax for 2023.
With this, the personnel and the committee condemned the UPD administration for its “errors” in fairly treating its workers who perform “essential” roles.
“In times of economic crisis and sky-high costs of living, this is untenable for our personnel who already contend with precarity of contractualization, a meager take-home pay, and the lack of economic and non-economic benefits that give periodic relief to regular employees,” the committee said.
It also amplified calls to UP admin to address demands on “full accountability” and to not load the workers with “injustice.”
“This is not a matter of simply being dutiful about taxes—the University bears the onus of responsibility as the culpable withholding agent and as an institution that should lead the way for just policies and humane working conditions for all its workers,” it added.
