Going camping? Here are some things you should know

From pitching a tent to outdoor essentials, adventurer and certified mountaineer Emmanuel Batungbacal shares some of the basics when heading outdoors

Summer season is always a time for adventure. Some like to spend their days on the beach, while others prefer to explore different terrains. Among the activities many want to tick off their bucketlist is camping. Through it, people can immerse themselves in nature, create special bonds with their friends and loved ones, and just unplug. Lucky for us here in the Philippines, we are blessed with many spots perfect for camping, some only a few hours away from Manila.

But the thing is, camping can be daunting, especially for beginners. And that’s just right, there are things to consider when doing such outdoor activity, from ensuring the safety of everyone to making sure no harm will be done to nature and its ecosystem.

During a camping event led by travel essentials and lifestyle brand Doughnut, Manila Bulletin Lifestyle got to experience camping at Viewscape Nature Park in Tanay, Rizal. During its “Summer Happy Campers” event, adventurer and certified mountaineer Emmanuel Batungbacal shared some of his knowledge to help novice campers have the best time while they are outdoors.

Pitching a tent

For many the perfect spot to pitch a tent is somewhere under a tree. But that’s not the case according to coach Emmanuel. Campers should look for a slightly sloping ground and avoid setting their tent on flat ground. This will allow water to flow in case it starts to rain while camping. Find a grassy spot for natural cushioning. It is also ideal to have a nearby water source and a scenic view to enjoy.

Pack the essentials

Apart from bringing a tent, campers should also pack weather-appropriate gear and clothing. Having a jacket and a bonnet or beanie is a must when camping in cold areas while avoiding dark-colored garments in warm campsites will make campers feel more comfortable.

Of course, a flashlight or lantern, pocket knife, water bottles, and mosquito repellent are some of the basic must-haves while camping. Coach Emmanuel also stressed the importance of bringing a first aid kit. He advised people to prepare their own and not buy the ready-made ones. Some of the things in his first aid kit are medicines, antiseptic spray, bandana, gauze, tape, and sanitary napkins as first aid bandages and protection for big wounds.

Dependable camping buddy

Having good company while camping ensures the best experience. But an ideal campsite buddy goes beyond just the people sitting around the campfire. A perfect camping companion can be a dependable bag that is adventure-ready, sustainable, and water-repellent. For us, one can find that in Doughnut's latest collections. The brand’s pride lies in its ability to produce pieces that are functional, stylish, and crafted from eco-friendly materials.

Its Dreamwalker series presents bags made from recycled polyester and upcycled Barley Skin leather trimming and has multi-functional slots enough to carry essentials and extras. The Happy Camper series bags are made from apple-peel skin vegan recycled leather and deadstock fabrics. The collection’s newest additions, the Binocular and the Hammock, feature a 2-in-1 design with a padded compartment for gadgets and a detachable pouch. The Jungle II series highlights the Drip, a bag that can be carried in three ways: crossbody, pouch, or as a water bottle holder.

Cleaning campsite

In camping, people not only get to be one with nature but it can also spark action for them to protect and preserve its beauty. Coach Emmanuel is one of the many adventurers who spread the word about the Leave No Trace policy and its seven principles. But he mainly stressed that campers should be responsible for their waste. Their trash should be with them as they leave the camp.

“Remember that when you’re exposed to nature and its beauty, that’s the only time you’re going to protect it,” coach Emmanuel. “You have to experience it.”
