The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) recognized the 2023 outstanding mentors who have significantly contributed to developing the country's next generation of health researchers.

In a statement on Monday, April 1, DOST-PCHRD Executive Director Jaime Montoya expressed his pride in the awardees and highlighted their role in "building the human resources in health research."
The awarding ceremony took place during the 42nd DOST anniversary celebration held last March 25 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).
"I hope that you can continue inspiring more to take this path of driving innovation for a healthier Filipino nation," Montoya told the awardees.
National awardees
Dr. Janet Alexis De Los Santos of the Visayas State University (VSU) emerged as the national winner for the Best Mentor in Health Research-Undergraduate Students Category.
Santos, an Associate Professor IV of VSU's Faculty of Nursing, had guided over 16 undergraduate student research groups, DOST said.
In the Graduate Students Category, Dr. May Anne Mata of the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao won the award.
DOST said Mata is a director of the Office of Research, a professor of applied mathematics, and a university scientist at UP.
It noted that she had mentored at least 30 graduate and undergraduate students.
Notably, she also led a PCHRD-supported project that developed a virtual tool for disease outbreak forecasting and modeling.
Meanwhile, Dr. Daisy R. Palompon of the Cebu Normal University (CNU) bagged the third category as the national awardee for the Early Career or Junior Researchers.
Palompon has mentored over 24 junior and early career researchers while working as a professor at the CNU.
She also previously served as the Vice President for Academics, Vice President for Research Extension and Publication, and Director of her institution's Center for Research and Development.
DOST added that cluster winners were also recognized apart from the national awardees.
For the Luzon Cluster, Dr. Jinky Marie T. Chua for the Undergraduate Students Category, Dr. Jacqueline V. Bagunu for the Graduate Students Category, and Dr. Reynaldo DL. Bundalian received the cluster awards for the Early Career and Junior Researchers Category.
Dr. Janet Alexis A. De Los Santos, Dr. Laurence L. Garcia, and Dr. Daisy R. Palompon are the awardees for the Visayas Cluster in the Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students, and Early Career and Junior Researchers categories, respectively.
Meanwhile, two mentors were recognized for the National Capital Region (NCR) Cluster: Dr. Reynaldo L. Garcia for the Undergraduate Students Category and Dr. Valentin C. Dones III for the Early Career and Junior Researchers Category.
DOST highlighted that the Best Mentor in Health Research Award, given every two years by DOST-PCHRD, acknowledges mentors who have played a vital role in building the capacity of health researchers.
The awardees were chosen based on their category, which included mentoring undergraduate, graduate, or early career and junior researchers and regional clusters.
