Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan joined the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory (MCJMD) in the launch of aftercare program “Kariton ng Bagong Buhay at Pag-asa (Food Cart of New Life and Hope)” for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in the city on Tuesday, April 10.

The aftercare program is an initiative led by Judge Maria Sophia Solidum-Taylor in collaboration with MCJMD that aims to empower and reintegrate the released PDLs into society.
The mayor also joined the launch of another MCJMD aftercare program, the “Padyak para sa Pagbabago (Bicycle for a Change)," which aims to support the livelihood programs of the jail facility.
It said that through the program, both the released PDLs and those who are in the jail can support each other's journey towards rehabilitation and empowerment.

Some former PDLs have already received the food cart, which will serve as a mobile livelihood unit that will offer food and beverages to their community and allow them to earn money.
Meanwhile, the “Padyak para sa Pagbabago '' program is made for PDLs who seek transformation, allowing them to be a part of the aftercare initiative.
It will offer the released PDL a delivery bicycle that will sell bread from Panaderia de Manila to support the livelihood programs inside the city jail.
Lacuna-Pangan applauded the city jail and Solidum-Taylor for giving PDLs opportunities to start their new lives.
“Napakaganda nitong proyektong naisip ni Judge Solidum-Taylor bilang bahagi ng after care program para sa ating mga kapatid na pansamantalang nanunuluyan dito sa loob ng Manila City Jail. Pagbibigay ito ng pag-asa para sa inyong pagharap sa panibagong yugto ng inyong buhay kapag kayo na nakalabas na rito (This is a wonderful project that Judge Solidum-Taylor thought of as part of the aftercare program for our brothers and sisters who are temporarily staying here inside the Manila City Jail. This will give you hope to face the new phase of life once you leave the facility),” the mayor said.
“Itong "Kariton ng Bagong Buhay at Pag-asa" at ang "Padyak para sa Pagbabago" ay payak na oportunidad na magbibigay ng hanap-buhay sa makakatanggap nito (This "Kariton ng Bagong Buhay at Pag-asa" and "Padyak para sa Pagbabago” are simple opportunities that will allow those who will receive them to earn),” she added.
MCJ added that the programs are aligned with the program of the city, “Kalinga sa Maynila”, to support and empower Manileños and PDLs in becoming more productive and responsible citizens.
