The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded “dangerous” heat index levels in 18 areas on Friday, April 19.

Catarman, Northern Samar registered the highest heat index of the day at 47 degrees Celsius (°C), based on PAGASA’s monitoring.

Other areas that experienced dangerous heat index on Friday were Dagupan City, Pangasinan (46°C); Aborlan, Palawan (44°C); Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) station, Pili, Camarines Sur (44°C); Roxas City, Capiz (43°C); Dumangas, Iloilo (43°C); Guiuan, Eastern Samar (43°C); Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (43°C); Bacnotan, La Union (42°C); Aparri, Cagayan (42°C); Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (42°C); Iba, Zambales (42°C); Ambulong, Tanauan, Batangas (42°C); Coron, Palawan (42°C); Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (42°C); Virac, Catanduanes (42°C); Davao City, Davao del Sur (42°C); and Cotabato City, Maguindanao (42°C).

PAGASA defines the heat index as the measurement of how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with the actual air temperature.

A heat index ranging from 42 to 51°C signifies an impending “danger,” with a high likelihood of experiencing heat cramps and heat exhaustion, and a probable risk of heat stroke if physical activity persists.

Meanwhile, a heat index of 52°C or higher indicates "extreme danger," which means "heat stroke is imminent."

PAGASA said some parts of the country may experience “extremely dangerous” heat index in May due to the warm and dry season and the ongoing effects of El Niño.
