The advocacy arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) on Friday, April 19, asked for immediate attention from the government regarding the issue of political prisoners in Negros Island.

In a statement, Caritas Philippines Vice President Bishop Gerardo Alminaza said this issue cannot be ignored.

Caritas was referring to the political prisoners who seek truth and accountability from the government where 139 or 20 percent of the prisoners are in Negros island.

Alminaza underscored the urgency of the situation and called for a thorough investigation into the rising tensions, alleged injustices, and alarming human rights violations.

“It is imperative that we stand united to condemn injustice and promote the common good," the statement said.

"Caritas Philippines stands firmly with the families and friends of these political prisoners as they seek truth and accountability,” it added.

Meanwhile, the group said that it is preparing for the 2025 Jubilee Year, with the theme "Pilgrims of Hope," to promote encouragement and resilience of the Good Shepherd to liberate the oppressed.

Caritas said this is a way to call for Pope Francis's Jubilee blessing on World Day of Prayer for Vocations to offer Jubilee blessing to invoke divine grace upon those "unjustly detained and oppressed."

In alignment with the previous Pope Francis's message, Caritas asserted the importance of human rights "in the face of adversity."

The group also asked the government to prioritize the protection of human rights and ensure accountability for perpetrators.

“The Philippine government must prioritize the protection of human rights and ensure accountability for perpetrators," the group said.

Caritas also called for a peaceful and just resolution of conflicts and invited authorities and civil society to listen to the voices of the oppressed.

"Together, let us sow the seeds of justice and peace that will bear fruit for a flourishing society where all individuals and communities can thrive," it added.
