The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude 5 earthquake jolted Surigao del Norte at 12:06 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17.

Phivolcs located the quake’s epicenter 33 kilometers (km) northeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 20 km, was tectonic or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area, it added.
Phivolcs said the tremor was “weak” at Intensity III in Dapa and Pilar, Surigao del Norte, while it was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Burgos, Surigao del Norte.
It was also recorded at Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in the City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte.
Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded Intensity II in the City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte.
