The House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs will hold a public briefing Thursday, April 18 in order to tackle a potential crisis plan for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in case an all-out war erupts in the Middle East.
Kabayan Party-list. Ron Salo, chairman of the committee, said the briefing was scheduled upon the instruction of House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
“The safety and security of our kababayans working abroad are of utmost importance, particularly in the Middle East’s uncertain climate. The upcoming briefing is a testament to the government’s proactive stance in ensuring all necessary preparations are undertaken to protect their lives and limbs in the event a war ensues amid the conflict,” Salo said in a statement.
The panel highlighted the need for a thorough crisis strategy that includes cooperation across multiple government agencies such as the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the Department of National Defense (DND), and the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
Salo pitched for the creation of strong mechanisms and streamlined processes that capable of swiftly addressing the needs of OFWs. He also cited the importance of expedited support, repatriation, and reintegration capabilities.
Salo encouraged OFWs in the Middle East to maintain caution and be prepared. “I implore our OFWs to stay alert, keep abreast of developments, and get in touch with our embassies without delay for any required support or repatriation.”
Consistent with a whole-of-nation approach, the Thursday panel briefing will involve various government agencies, private sector representatives, and OFW organizations.
“We join in prayer for the easing of hostilities between the nations involved and for the enduring peace and well-being of all. We stand with our OFWs and their families in these trying times, ready to execute all necessary measures for their protection,” Salo concluded.
