Former House Speaker, Davao del Norte 1st district Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez has ridiculed the United States (US) over its choice of leaders even as he criticized the Marcos administration for its apparent preference of siding with the Americans.
In a statement Tuesday, April 16, Alvarez said he believes the foreign policy direction taken by the Marcos government "merely serves the interests of the Americans instead of – and with much unnecessary risk to – the lives and liberties of Filipinos".
The outspoken congressman from Mindanao then brought up China as a point of comparison with the US.
“Tingnan natin ang long-term perspective. Ang China may continuity ang liderato, habang ang mga Amerikano, pagdating ng Nobyembre, kailangan mamili: yung ulyanin o yung baliw? Dagdag pa, baon sila sa utang, nag-aaway-away at binabaril kapwa nila Amerikano," he said.
(Let's look at the long-term perspective. China has continuity in its leadership, while the Americans, come November, will have to make a choice: the senile one, or the crazy one? On top that, they are buried in debt, and they quarrel and shoot each other.)
Alvarez was referring to the 2024 US elections, where incumbent President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump are expected to lead the race for the Oval Office. Biden is Democrat, while Trump is Republican.
The former House chief futher claimed that the time of the US on the geopolitical spotlight is comign to an end.
“Patapos na ang siglo ng mga Amerikano, tapos doon pa nila gusto pumusta? Pag-isipan natin ito ng mabuti," Alvarez said.
(The age of the Americans are coming to an end, and yet they still want to bet on them? Let's think about this carefully.)
"Our national interest compels us to look beyond how Hollywood and American propaganda brainwashed our thinking for the past century, and made us blind to our true national interest, which is to serve and protect the lives, liberties, and future of our people," he underscored.
