House Speaker Martin Romualdez is calling for a quick and peaceful resolution to the recent capture of a Portuguese-flagged container ship that has four Filipino seafarers on board by Iranian authorities.
“In times of crisis, our foremost concern is the safety and security of our Filipino seafarers. We call for a peaceful resolution to swiftly resolve this distressing situation and ensure their prompt return home,” Romualdez said in a statement Tuesday, April 16.
Iran’s state-run IRNA News Agency earlier reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) Special Naval Force had seized the vessel MSC Aries near the Strait of Hormuz last Saturday. This was due to the vessel' alleged connection to Israel.
Romualdez, the leader of the 300-plus-strong House of Representatives, expressed deep concern for the welfare of the Filipino seafarers aboard the MSC Aries.
"[It] deeply troubles us because it poses a potential threat to the safety of our Filipino seafarers. Ensuring their safety and well-being is the government’s utmost priority," the Speaker stressed.
The vessel's operator has confirmed the incident and is currently collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure the safe return and well-being of its 25 crew members, including the four Filipinos.
The House chief cited the reassuring efforts of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), acting under the directives of President Marcos, in providing extensive government support and aid to the families of the seafarers.
He noted that the DMW is also actively working with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the licensed manning agency, ship manager, and operator to facilitate the swift release of the Filipino seafarers.
Romualdez underscored the crucial importance of international collaboration and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the matter.
“Now more than ever, global cooperation is essential to navigate through this challenging situation,” said the Leyte 1st district congressman.
“We must work together towards a peaceful resolution to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved parties,” he added.
