Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga 3rd district Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. says Davao del Norte 1st district Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez's appeal to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to abandon President Marcos is a blatant attack on democracy.
In a statement on Tuesday, April 16, Gonzales said the former House Speaker should not be allowed to incite instability and undermine the democratic process.
“As leaders, we must uphold the rule of law and respect the democratic process,” the House leader said.
“His call for the withdrawal of support from the duly-elected President with an overwhelming mandate from 31 million Filipinos is a direct attack on our democratic institutions,” he added.
Gonzalez is referring to the number of voters who elected President Marcos to his position during the May 2022 national elections.
Alvarez, who is a close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, gave the controversial remark during a rally in Tagum City as a response to “escalating tensions and potential war” in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
This comes right after his appeal for Marcos to resign as president and be replaced by Vice President Sara Duterte because of the former’s supposed inadequacies in handling issues concerning the WPS.
Gonzales is now calling for the immediate filing of legal charges against Alvarez for his “seditious” remarks.
He said this is to ensure accountability and prevent any further attempts to destabilize the government.
