No classes in Marikina on city's founding anniversary on April 16

The Marikina City local government announced the suspension of classes in all levels on Tuesday, April 16, in celebration of the city's 394th founding anniversary.

"In celebration of the founding anniversary of Marikina City, pursuant to Republic Act No. 10788, I am pleased to announce that April 16, 2024 will be observed as a special working holiday, with no classes in all levels in public and private schools in the entire city of Marikina. This anniversary serves as a poignant reminder of our city’s illustrious past and the indomitable spirit of its people," Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro said.

The mayor has also released the list of activities in celebration of Marikina's founding anniversary:

Bike parade

The city government also held a bike festival on Sunday, April 14, as part of its culminating activities leading to the city's founding anniversary.

Around 600 cyclists took part in the bike parade followed by a bike race circling around Marikina. A bicycle exhibition was also held at the Marikina Freedom Park.

Teodoro said the oldest biker who participated in the activity was an 89-year-old resident of Barangay Concepcion Dos.

The mayor explained that the local government had since been advocating for safe biking in the city, adding that it already has a network of bike lanes since 1996.

“Dine-develop natin ang bike facilities natin dito sa Marikina. At ang isa pa nating i-de-develop ay ‘yung mga shower areas, shower rooms changing areas para doon sa mga nag-bibisikleta lalo na doon sa Bike to Work (We are developing our bike facilities here in Marikina and another thing we will develop are the shower areas, shower rooms changing areas for bikers, especially those who Bike to Work),” the local chief explained.

Teodoro said he is also planning to build a bike park for Marikina residents.
