The Quezon City government and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP-NCR) have began transferring male Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) to new city jail facility in Payatas.
According to BJMP-NCR, a total of 364 elderly and persons with disabilities and comorbidities transferred to the new facility earlier this month.
The city’s male jail population is currently at 2,981.
The new jail facility is a 2.4-hectare land turned over by the QC LGU to BJMP in March 2022, complying to the standards of United Nations with three 5-storey buildings, consisting of 440 cells, each having proper air ventilation, water supply, and lights.
Each cell has two electric fans, a bathroom area, and bunk beds and can hold up to 20 PDLs.
Around 240 cells are being utilized as of this writing.
“I want our male PDLs to have various opportunities they can pursue like alternative education, seminars, and livelihood programs which can help them become productive citizens,” Mayor Joy Belmonte daid.
The city mayor personally inspected the new facility last April 6.
