Ateneo gets back at UE for fourth win

While the Blue Eagles and the Lady Warriors have already been eliminated from the Final Four race, both squads continue to jockey for the final standings position as the semifinal cast has been set. 

With Far Eastern University securing the last Final Four ticket with a massive upset win over top seed University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo got back at UE for their sorry opening day loss last Feb. 17. 

The Katipunan squad hiked its tally to 4-8 in the standings with two more games to go, while UE slid to a 2-9 record with three matches left in the eliminations.

All hands were on deck as Ateneo relied on collective effort with everyone contributing in the extended affair. 

Lyann De Guzman unloaded a team-high 25 points built on 21 attacks, three blocks and a service ace, while Zel Tunashima added 18 markers. 

Sobe Buena and AC Miner had an equally reliable showing with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Veteran skipper Roma Doromal was all over the floor after posting a double-double defensive line with 23 receptions and 23 digs.

After 11 consecutive Final Four appearances, Ateneo was booted out of Final Four contention last year for the first time since Season 71. 

Unfortunately, the drought continued for the Blue Eagles only this time under the system of new head coach Sergio Veloso. 

Rookie star Casiey Dongallo led all scorers in the losing effort with 27 points but just couldn’t lift up UE this time around even with another monstrous output.

Dongallo was all alone in the battle as there were no other Lady Warriors in double figures.
