Winning the competition is no small task.

Thus, said Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara as he vowed to file a resolution commending the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law Team for winning the 2024 Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition.

“A total of 642 teams from 100 countries took part in the event and they include the best law schools in the world. Being a product of the UP College of Law myself, their victory fills me with so much pride,” Angara said in a statement.

According to the senator, this noteworthy victory serves as a demonstration of the skill and mettle of Filipino law students.

“The consistently strong performance of the Philippines in these moot court exercises is a clear testament to the quality of our legal education. We must continue to foster academic excellence, not only in the field of law, but also in other disciplines,” he added.

The UP Law team’s victory is the Philippines’ third in what is considered the most prestigious moot court competition in the world.

The country’s first win came in 1995 with a team also coming from the UP College of Law. In 2004, a team from the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) won the title.

The 2024 team is composed of Mary Regine Dadole, Pauline De Leon, Pauline Samantha Sagayo, Chinzen Viernes, and Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal.

In the final round of the competition, they defeated the team from the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella of Argentina to emerge as the world champions.

The 2024 iteration of the Jessup Moot Court Competition took place in Washington, DC. It utilized a simulation of a fictional dispute between two nations before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The team was coached by UP Law professor Marianne Vitug, who was herself a world champion and best oralist in the 2018 Stetson International Environmental Law Moot Court Competition.
