P5.3-M marijuana destroyed in Ilocos Sur

CAMP DIEGO SILANG, La Union – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency discovered 26,700 fully grown marijuana plants in five plantations with a total land area of 4,200-square meters during an eradication operation in Sitio Tangilig, Barangay Bunga, Sugpon, Ilocos Sur on Friday, April 12.

The marijuana valued at P5.3 million was uprooted and burned on-site, said PDEA-Region 1 (Ilocos) Director Joel B. Plaza.

Government intelligence assets reported the presence of marijuana plantations in the area.

PDEA-Region 1 collected samples for forensic laboratory examination.

Police Brig. Gen. Lou F. Evangelista, Police Regional Office-1 chief, commended police and the PDEA for the success of the operation.

He underscored the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat the ill-effects of illegal drugs.

“This operation serves as a resounding message to all those involved in the illicit drug trade: Law enforcement agencies stand united, determined, and vigilant in safeguarding our communities against the menace of narcotics,” Evangelista said.

The eradication of marijuana plants, a significant step in the fight against illegal drugs, brings hope for a drug-free future, he added.

Plaza said they are conducting follow-up investigation to identify the cultivator.
