The police’s elite Special Action Force (SAF) has started conducting specialized courses for all its commandos that include airborne operations and rapid deployment in all areas that would suddenly become hostile environments. 

SAF director Police Maj. Gen. Bernard Banac emphasized the importance of continuing training programs amid what he described as continuously evolving security challenges, particularly in the maritime domain, that requires the ability for quick deployment in case of any eventuality.

“We recognize the critical role of airborne operations in navigating an ever-evolving security landscape. The ability to rapidly deploy forces into hostile environments is strategically imperative,” said Banac in his speech during the opening of the Basic Airborne Course for SAF commandos.

“Beyond tactical utility, airborne training instills a sense of confidence, camaraderie, and esprit de corps that is unparalleled. It tests not only the physical stamina of individuals but also the mental fortitude, resilience, and ability to perform under pressure,” he added.

SAF commandos are highly-respected and the police’s first line of defense against internal security threats like local terror groups in Mindanao, communist rebels and other threat groups in all parts of the country.

With internal security now stabilizing with the peace agreement with Moro rebel groups in Mindanao and the weakening operational capability of the communist rebels, Banac has started shifting the training programs for SAF commandos on territorial defense.

Security experts deemed the territorial defense-centered training as important amid what they described as geopolitical dynamics shifting and the tensions brewing in the Philippine territory.

Banac said they recognized the importance of such training programs, as well as the importance of being at the forefront of any eventuality.

“As part of our strategic preparedness measures, the SAF continues to conduct specialized courses to equip our personnel with the necessary skills and expertise to respond swiftly and effectively to emerging challenges,” said Banac.

Banac said the Basic Airborne Course serves as evidence of SAF's unwavering commitment to excellence and preparedness in the face of adversity. 

“As tensions escalate and uncertainties emerge, the SAF remains steadfast in its mission to protect and serve the Filipino people with valor and distinction,” said Banac.
