Adamson turns back UP for third win, keeps Final Four hopes alive

The Lady Falcons ended a six-game losing streak for a 3-8 card in the standings as they remained one loss away from semifinal elimination.

As of press time, top seed University of Santo Tomas followed by last season’s finalists De La Salle and National University have secured their Final Four berths, with Far Eastern University on the verge of clinching the last seat. 

Libero Karen Verdeflor took charge of Adamson’s floor defense with 26 receptions and 15 digs in the extended affair. 

Meanwhile, four players led the way in the offensive zone with Barbie Jamili and Mayang Nuique scoring 16 and 15 points, respectively, in the balanced attack. 

Jen Villegas and Red Bascon, for their parts, delivered 12 and 10 markers, respectively, to help the cause. 

Locked at 13-all in the fifth and final set, UP skipper Abi Goc committed a costly service error that put Adamson at match point before Villegas denied Irah Jaboneta at the net to seal the win. 

Meanwhile, league-leading best blocker Niña Ytang paced the Fighting Maroons with 17 points highlighted by seven kill blocks. 

Joan Monared and Jewel Encarnacion had 16 markers each.  

The also-ran State U was actually eliminated from the Final Four race last week and has since been playing for pride as it slipped further to a 1-11 mark in the standings. 

UP has two more remaining games left to snap a five-game losing skid and bounce back from its one-win campaign last season.
