PLDT Inc. and its mobile network unit Smart Communications, Inc. reiterated its support for the government's push to digitalize services offered by local government units (LGUs), noting its plans to provide needed equipment to aid in LGUs' transition.
In a statement on April 11, PLDT and Smart First Vice President and Head of Group Corporate Communications Cathy Yang said the telco is "always ready to work hand-in-hand with the Government to deliver leveled-up services to Filipinos across the country."
“We welcome and support the Government's efforts to promote ease of doing business by streamlining its processes, especially as it rolls out the red carpet to its partners in the private sector, instead of red tape,” added Smart Head of Joint Strategic Operations Atty. Pamela B. Felizarta.
The telco shared that it plans to turn over refurbished desktop computers to LGUs nationwide, however the specifications for this rollout are still being discussed between the telco and the government agencies concerned, PLDT told Manila Bulletin.
The potential provision of computer equipment is part of the telco's contribution to the "eLGU (electronic LGU) program," spearheaded by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA).
The eLGU program aims to "enhance bureaucratic efficiency in public service delivery," by automating business permit, clearance, and license processes in all cities and municipalities in the country.
The eLGU program was launched during the eLGU Caravan held last March 20. Using the eLGU system, business and building permit applications can be accessed online, according to the DILG. The agencies hope to promote the use of the system to more LGUs, through more caravans.
PLDT and Smart have been supporting government initiatives such as ARTA's telco workshops to improve digital connectivity and help bridge the digital divide in the Philippines.
Notably, the telco participated in the creation of Executive Order No. 32, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr in July last year, which pushes for the streamlining of permitting processes for construction, installation, repair, operation, and maintenance of telecommunications and internet infrastructure.
