As the nation observes National Filipino Food Month this April, Caritas Manila executive director and Radio Veritas president Fr. Anton Pascual called for stronger support for the country’s agricultural sector.

The Church leader said problems that affect the food industry must be identified and addressed. There must also be efforts to raise awareness on its importance as well as programs to assist agricultural workers.
“The observance of the Philippine Food Month this April is a significant celebration for us to have increased awareness on the importance of the food industry. Let us pray for the country’s agricultural sector for the government to give it top priority so as to help our farmers and fishermen to produce more. That way, we will no longer need to import. We are an agricultural country, we should be rich in food sourced from agricultural lands and the sea,” said Fr. Pascual over Radio Veritas.
The priest urged the public to consume more fruits and vegetables for better health. He cited reports that 80 percent of food borne diseases were caused by a high meat consumption.
“Filipino Food Month also reminds us to consume more food that will potentially make us stronger and healthier. Food that heals and will help give us a longer life. Food that has no face like vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and legumes,” said Fr. Pascual.
“Let us lessen our consumption of meat to help lower our chances for food borne illnesses. Around 80 percent of health issues are a result of high meat intake. Let us be healthy in body, mind and spirit. Let us consume food that heals, will give us a longer life and will make us stronger longer,” he added.
Filipino Food Month is celebrated every April to highlight appreciation as well as to preserve Filipino culinary heritage.
