Despite needing an extra set to turn back UP, UST was dominant all the same.
Without top scorer Poyos, who had to sit out the match due to dehydration per the team announcement, UST was in safe hands with Jonna Perdido and Regina Jurado taking turns in the onslaught.
Perdido matched her previous career-high 24 points highlighted by 22 attacks and tallied 23 of it in the first three sets, while Jurado also finished with a season-best 24 markers of her own built on 21 attacks and three blocks.
Xyza Gula contributed 12 attacks on 12 kills to fill the void in the Poyos-less rotation.
Per UST head coach Kung Fu Reyes, Poyos has been feeling under the weather since last Sunday, so the decision to let her recover was a no-brainer.
Reyes added that Poyos will be back with the team on Saturday’s game against Far Eastern University.
“Ahead of time, alam namin na ‘yung recovery time ni Angge hindi aabot for this match. I think ‘yun ang pinaka importante, we still have the 12 strong players na ready to respond whatever the task is,” said Reyes.
On the other hand, the State U was formally booted out of Final Four contention following FEU’s straight-set win over Adamson a day prior.
However, the Fighting Maroons played for pride with a hard-fought third set win over the Golden Tigresses to extend the match.
After four consecutive losses, though, UP is now reeling with 10 overall against just a lone win against University of the East in the first round.
Meanwhile, Niña Ytang and Steph Bustrillo paced the Fighting Maroons with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
