President Marcos said the government would do its best to revert to the previous school calendar following a week of suspension of classes in different parts of the country due to the extreme heat.

Marcos said this after the Department of Education (DepEd), headed by Vice President Sara Duterte, said that while it is implementing measures to return to the old school calendar, the transition would only fully take hold in 2026.

In an interview in San Juan City on Wednesday, April 10, the President said he understands the sentiments of the stakeholders who are pushing to return to the June to March calendar.

Various groups have called for the return to the old school calendar due to the heat experienced by students during March and April.

"Hangga’t maaari gusto nating ibalik sa dati dahil medyo may consensus na talaga na mas maganda yung dating schedule (As much as possible we would like to bring back the old calendar because there's already a consensus that it was better)," he said.

"Sa aming palagay mahihirapan pa tayo ngunit hangga’t may paraan ay gagawan natin ng paraan para mapaaga at mapabilis ang pagbalik sa normal na schedule ng mga bata (We think it's not going to be easy but as long as there's a way, we're going to find ways to do it earlier and revert the students to their normal schedule)," he added.

According to Marcos, no one expected the drastic change in the climate.

"Ang naging problema diyan is the climate change dahil nagbago yung season (Climate change is the problem because the season changed)," he said.

"At kagaya ngayon, hindi naman natin inaasahan na ganito. Usually, by now, napakainit na pero maaga pa mainit na talaga kaya’t kailangan namin mag-adjust (We didn't expect it to be hot like this. By now it's supposed to be hot but we didn't expect the heat to come early. We had to adjust)," he added.

Lawmakers have filed proposals to revert to the old calendar, saying the present one running from August to June is inappropriate in the country.
