High-ranking members of the House of Representatives are banking on the upcoming trilateral meeting between the United States (US), Japan, and the Philippines to rake in "enormous" economic benefits for Filipinos.
Senior Deputy Speaker Pampanga 3rd district Rep. Aurelio "Dong" Gonzales Jr., Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. David "Jayjay" Suarez, and Majority Leader Zamboanga City 2nd district Rep. Manuel Jose "Mannix" Dalipe are all looking forward to the historic meeting slated on April 11.
“We expect the three leaders to agree on expanded economic cooperation among their nations. The economic advantages this summit could produce for us Filipinos are potentially enormous,” Gonzales said in a statement Wednesday, April 10.
He was referring to US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and President Marcos.
Dalipe echoed Gonzales' expectations and said that trade cooperation would most likely be enhanced as a result of the three leaders’ discussions.
“We have to remember that the US and Japan are among our country’s biggest trading partners,” he said.
For his part, Suarez says the Philippines also anticipates increased military and financial help from the US and Japan.
“These two allies of ours are our largest and most generous sources of official development assistance,” noted the deputy speaker.
Gonzales, Dalipe, and Suarez pointed out that aside from economic gains, the Philippines and the Indo-Pacific region in general could expect peace dividends from the trilateral summit.
They said Biden, Kishida, and Marcos will surely discuss peace and stability in the region, particularly in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
According to them, the South China Sea is a vital world trade route.
They said the international community must ensure freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea. Peace in the area will contribute to the economic development of the region, they noted.
