On Tuesday's celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan, the police’s elite Special Action Force (SAF) showed what valor really means.
Two police medal of valor awardees graced the SAF’s celebration of the 82nd Araw ng Kagitingan in a ceremony held at its headquarters in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.
SAF director Maj. Gen. Bernard Banac said they invited the two medal of valor awardees to honor their contribution in risking their lives to defend the country, as well as showing the police commandos of the true meaning of nationalism and bravery.
The first guest was retired police colonel Elmar B. Sillador who led more or less 100 policemen in a fierce gun battle with more than 500 communist rebels who were supposed to attack a police headquarters in Cawait, Surigao del Sur in 1991.
For his bravery as officer-in-charge of the 426th PNP Company, then president Corazon Aquino awarded Sillador with the highest award for combat.
The second guest was retired police major Jacinto Moreno, who led 15 soldiers and government militiamen men in defending their patrol base in Eastern Samar when more than 60 communist rebels tried to overrun it in 1985.
“The ceremony served as a reflection of the unwavering courage and selflessness exhibited by our fallen heroes and living legends,” said Banac, referring to the celebration with the theme "Pagpaparangal Sa Kagitingan ng mga Beterano: Saligan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino".
“Both esteemed recipients of the Medal of Valor, graced the event with their presence, symbolizing the embodiment of bravery and sacrifice,” he added.
In his speech during the ceremony, Banac pointed out that the annual celebration is a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of valor and sacrifice inspiring all to uphold the highest ideals of duty, honor, and patriotism.
“True valor is not solely measured by victories in battle or accolades received, but by a steadfast commitment to upholding the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy,” said Banac.
Meanwhile, Banac awarded a PNP Wounded Personnel Medal to Police Corporal Jason H. Jalvez for his bravery displayed in a fierce gun battle with communist rebels in Barangay Agao-Ao, Ragay, Camarines Sur.
"Amid a 15-minute firefight, he and his team displayed exceptional valor and resolve, effectively neutralizing the threat posed by the CT (communist terrorists) members and ensuring the safety of civilians and comrades," said Banac.
"The operation resulted in the seizure of a cache of weapons and equipment, including firearms, ammunition, and tactical gear, underscoring the success of their mission," he added.
