'Walang malisya': Garin advises women not to use underwear at home this summer

Department of Health (DOH) secretary-turned Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin has advised Filipino women to go commando--or not use any underwear--while they are at home this summer.

Before you get any naughty ideas, Garin merely gave this tip as a way for women to avoid developing itchiness in their intimate area amid the perspiration-inducing heat.

"Lalo na sa tag-init--wala lang malisya no--pero kung nasa bahay ka lang naman or matutulog, it's quite advisable na walang underwear pero nakapajama ka naman or naka-shorts," Garin said in a press conference Monday, April 1.

(Especially this summer--and I say this with no malice--if you're just at home or about to go to bed, it's quite advisable not to wear underwear but with pajamas or shorts.)

"Yung ventilation na yan ay epektibo para mapigilan or hindi na lumala yung fungal infection," she said.

(This ventilation is an effective way to stop or prevent the worsening of fungal infection.)

Garin said that women are prone to develop fungal infection during summer.

"So hindi yan sexually-transmitted disease.Yan ay dala na yung normal flora sa intimate area, sa pubic area, sa perineal area ng babae.

(That is not a sexually-transmitted disease. That is caused by the normal flora in the intimate area, the pubic area, the perineal area of women.)

"Kapag medyo basa, napapawisan, at medyo mainit yung panahon, eh yan ay perfect petri dish para dumami yung ating fungi...Kaya siya nagiging makati," explained the House deputy majority leader.

(If it's wet, or sweaty, and the weather is hot, then that creates the perfect petri dish for the fungi to grow...That’s why it becomes itchy.)

"So the more you scratch, the more you will itch. Wag siyang kamutin. At hindi siya nakakahawa ano. Yung iba akala nila sexually-transmitted. No, it's not.

(Don't scratch it. It's not contagious. Others think that it's sexually-transmitted. No, it's not)

"Ang importante doon ay may gamot naman yan (The important thing is, there’s medication for it), but you have to keep that area dry," she further said.

Perineal is derived from the word perineum, which refers to the tiny patch of sensitive skin between a person's genitals.
