'Unfair' to call for PBBM's resignation over Philippine-China maritime dispute--Garin

House Deputy Majority Leader Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin believes that Davao del Norte 1st district Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez's resignation call on President Marcos is "unfair".

Speaking in a press conference Monday, April 1, Garin said that it would be better for Alvarez to instead present solutions to the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue, which based on the latter's recent remarks isn't being handled well by Marcos.

"Ang isang tao kapag binoto ng tao ang makakatanggal sa kanya ay yung sambayanang Pilipino rin. So, it's not fair for one person to call the President to resign specifically if you cannot pinpoint the specific lapses," Garin said.

(A person voted into power can only be unseated by the Filipino people.)

"But you know, calling for our President to resign simply because there is a dispute on territorial boundaries that was never really solved by other presidents but of course except iyong nanalo nga tayo sa Hague (except for the case at The Hague that we won). Pero yun nga (But then), again the implementation became a problem," she said.

Alvarez, a former House Speaker, advised Marcos last week to resign as a way to “de-escalate the tension in the WPS between the Philippines and China".

A Marcos resignation would pave the way for Vice President Duterte to assume the Palace seat as a matter of constitutional succession.

The Mindanao congressman is a close ally of former president Rodrigo Duterte, the incumbent Vice President's father.

Garin said she would rather exert effort on finding real solutions to the WPS problem.

"So iyong mga ganitong bagay tingnan natin ano ba ang dapat na solusyon (As for these matters, let's look at the possible solutions). Maybe it will be a good contribution of the former Speaker to put forward solutions. Ano ba ang pwedeng solusyon dito sa dispute na ito (What are the possible solutions to this dispute)?

"Ano ba ang dapat gawin (What is the proper action) instead for calling for a resignation because that resignation will not really solve the problem," Garin said.

In July 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in the Hague, Netherlands invalidated Beijing's nine-dash line claim. The arbitration case was pursued by the Philippines during the administration of the late president Benigno S. Aquino III.
