Marcos vows to work with PNP vs cybercrime, terrorism

President Marcos has expressed his intention to work with the Philippine National Police (PNP) in addressing cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational crimes as he named its new leader on Monday, April 1.

Marcos said this as he swore into office Police Major General Rommel Francisco Marbil as the 30th PNP Chief.

In his speech, the President said the government would work with the PNP in upholding the highest standards of professionalism and give the finest service to our beloved citizens.

"You have my full confidence and my full support as you begin to champion a police that is pro-God, pro-country, pro-people, and pro-environment," he said.

"Let us work closely with you in addressing emerging threats such as cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational crimes," he added.

Marcos said he wanted the PNP to continue being agents of progressive transformation by ensuring the safety and well-being of every community in the country.

"I enjoin everyone to face the coming days with even greater fervor, determination, and optimism to achieve our goals and aspirations for this nation," he said.

"Let us remain vigilant in the face of challenges and opportunities as we strive to build a Bagong Pilipinas where everyone can thrive and live in peace," he added.

Meanwhile, President Marcos thanked the over 230,000 men and women of the PNP for their role in the organization's success and the country's development.

He likewise expressed his appreciation to the families of the PNP personnel for their sacrifices as they "understand the demands attached to the uniform that you wear."

Marbil is from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 1991. Before being named the new PNP Chief, he headed the Directorate for Comptrollership and served as the Regional Director of the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8), and Director of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG), among others.

He replaced Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr. who was supposed to step down from his post last December after turning 56 years old, the mandatory retirement age for PNP personnel, but President Marcos extended his term until March 31, 2024.
