Coins donated by 'Alay Lakad' participants to help build Chapel of Our Lady of Antipolo

Diocese of Antipolo Bishop Ruperto C. Santos has expressed his gratitude to the thousands of pilgrims and devotees who joined the “Alay Lakad” to the International Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Antipolo Cathedral) on Maundy Thursday, March 28.

In a statement, the bishop thanked those who offered coins in front of the altar citing the Lenten activity as Alay Lakad Bukas Palad in reference to the generosity of the participants.

“God’s people gave with thankful hearts in response to His grace. Their Alay Lakad came with Bukas Palad,” said Bishop Santos as he called the donations “coins of charity.”

“As the coins touched the sanctuary of our Cathedral, they resonate the sounds of your cares and concerns,” said Bishop Santos.

“We will give them back to you,” the Church leader stressed. 

The donations will help build the Chapel of Our Lady of Antipolo in barangay Sampaloc in Tanay, Rizal.

“A chapel for your family, for renewal of marital vows, a place where people congregate and flourish, a wedding destination of the Diocese of Antipolo in honor of Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje. Our journey begins and we will build,” said Bishop Santos.

The construction of the chapel has begun and the Alay Lakad donations, which usually amount to about a hundred thousand according to the Antipolo Cathedral, will be a big help in funding the project. 

The “Alay Lakad” (Penitential Walk) from Metro Manila and nearby provinces to Antipolo City’s International Shrine of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage is an annual Holy Week activity observed on Maundy Thursday.

The Lenten activity is a tradition observed by many with some even walking barefoot, towards the Antipolo Cathedral as part of their penitential vow. 

The Alay Lakad involves walking a distance of about 17 kilometers. It was suspended for more than two years because of the pandemic.

Upon reaching the Antipolo Cathedral, the participants would utter a short  prayer or make wish in front of the altar before tossing some coins or paper bills towards the altar as their donation. 

A popular pilgrimage site, the Antipolo Cathedral was formally declared as the country’s first international shrine in January this year. Pope Francis has also gifted the cathedral with the Golden Rose, the first Marian shrine to be given the recognition in the country.

The Diocese of Antipolo is currently preparing for the upcoming pilgrimage season which begins in May and lasts until July.
