Emma Malabuyo clinched a spot in the women’s floor exercise final while Carlos Yulo’s title-retention bid in vault came to an end after failing to advance to the Top 8 in the Baku leg of the 2024 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series in Azerbaijan.

The Fil-American Malabuyo displayed grace and flexibility to score 13.000 for sixth place to earn a shot at the gold medal in the tournament, which offers qualifying points for the Paris Olympics.
She finished behind top qualifier Ou Yushan of China, who scored 13.433; as well as American Reese Esponda (13.433), Japan’s Aiko Sugihara (13.266), Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour (13.166) and Austria’s Charlize Moerz (13.066).
Other qualifiers were Panama’s Hillary Heron (13.000) and Spain’s Laura Casabuena (12.933).
Malabuyo also came close to advancing to the balance beam final, but settled as first reserve after finishing ninth with 12.933.
Meanwhile, Yulo was far from his best form in vault after averaging 13.933 for 21st place.
Competing with a 5.6 degree of difficulty, the two-time world champion executed his first vault with flourish and scored 13.700.
But he faltered on his more complex routine in his second vault after earning a 0.30 penalty despite a higher 8.866 score on execution for 14.166.
Hong Kong’s Shek Wai Hung topped the qualifiers with an impressive 14.916 average while Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth, who finished silver behind Yulo last year, came in second with 14.683.
Yulo also failed to advance in the horizontal bar final after settling for 16th with 13.566, and in the pommel horse after finishing at 41st with 11.566.
That leaves him competing for only one gold in the leg after advancing in the floor exercise final the day before.
Meanwhile, Fil-Am Levi Ruivivar also failed to earn a spot in the balance beam final after finishing 21st with 12.100.
The former US national team member had already qualified in the uneven bars final.
