- The House of Representatives' pro-Charter change measure, Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No.7 can help address the country's unemployment woes through the benefits of liberalization.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez (Speaker’s office)
Unemployment rate went up, you say? House Speaker Martin Romualdez says that this is exactly why Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No.7, which espouses economic Charter change (Cha-cha), is needed.
In a chance interview with reporters Friday, March 8 in Quezon City, Romualdez was asked to react to the increase in unemployment rate from 3.1 percent in December 2023 to 4.5 percent in January 2024.
He didn't hesitate to put the spotlight on RBH No.7, which the House is poised to approve on third and final reading later this month.
"Yung mga numerong yan sa Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) dynamic yan, gumagalaw talaga yan. Kaya yung mga programang ginagawa natin lalo na sa paggastos ng ating budget, lalo na itong panukalang RBH No.7 natin, makakatulong na rin yan," Romualdez answered.
(Those numbers from the Philippine Statistics Authority are dynamic, they're really fluid. That's why we're doing these programs to help like the spending of the budget and the proposed RBH No.7).
"Kasi kapag na-liberalize na or nabuksan ang ating ekonomiya, mas maraming foreign direct investment (FDI) na pumasok at mas maraming trabaho ang mabibigay natin sa taumbayan," he explained.
(Because once the economy is liberalized or opened, more foreign direct investments will enter the county leading to the creation of more jobs to our countrymen.)
The PSA released the unemployment figures earlier Friday.
"Sa totoo lang po yung numero na yan ay talagang dynamic talaga yan, nag-flactuate talaga yan. Pero araw-araw ginagawan natin ng paraan yan kagaya po itong RBH No.7," Romualdez said.
(The truth is that those figures are real,y dynamic, they fluctuate. But everyday we do things to address it, and among these are RBH No.7)
The 300-member House of Representatives, acting as a Committee of the Whole, approved RBH No.7Y last Wednesday, March 6.
