PH may have cyclone-free weekend but light rains still possible due to 'amihan'
Despite the low probability of tropical cyclone formation, the weather this weekend could be influenced by the northeast monsoon, locally known as "amihan,” which could bring light rains to parts of Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Friday, March 8.
Based on PAGASA’s weekly weather forecast, the amihan will be the prevailing weather system over Northern and Central Luzon, resulting in cloudy skies and light rains in Aurora, Cagayan Valley, and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) until Saturday, March 9.
The amihan may also bring isolated light rains over the rest of Northern and Central Luzon during this time.
Meanwhile, easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, will bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms across the rest of the country.
By Sunday, March 10, PAGASA said the shear line—a rain-inducing weather system formed by the convergence of northeast monsoon and easterly winds—will bring cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms to Quezon province and Bicol Region.
Due to the amihan, the weather in Aurora, Cagayan Valley, and CAR will remain cloudy with light rains, while Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, the Ilocos Region, and the rest of Central Luzon will experience isolated light rains.
Easterlies will continue to affect the rest of the country, bringing partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, mostly in the eastern section of the country.
By Monday, March 11, PAGASA said the shear line will bring cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms to Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas.
Meanwhile, the amihan is expected to bring partly cloudy to cloudy weather with isolated light rains to Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Visayas and Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies.
From Tuesday to Friday, March 12 to 15, PAGASA said “another surge of amihan” may affect most of Luzon.
“During this period, the eastern section of Luzon will be cloudy with light rains, while Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated light rains,” it said.
The rest of the country will continue to have partly cloudy to cloudy weather with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon or evening, because of the easterlies.
