“We strongly reject any insinuations that the pursuit of justice for alleged victims of human trafficking, sexual abuse, and other criminal activities constitutes oppression," Caritas, the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said in a statement on Thursday, March 7.
“Any interpretation that pursuing justice for alleged victims of human trafficking, sexual abuse, and other related offenses is oppression we vehemently dismiss,” it added.
The organization emphasized that to imply due process means protecting individuals from accountability for their actions under such serious charges only constitutes a “dangerous and frankly offensive distortion” of the justice system.
Caritas stood by its previous statement that urges Quiboloy to attend the Senate inquiry and any other legitimate investigations.
“This is not about silencing him or denying him his rights; it is about ensuring that all voices are heard and that the truth prevails,” it said.
Caritas added that Senator Marcos' attempt to "frame" the Senate inquiry as a politically motivated attack is not only "insensitive" to the alleged victims' but also undermined the integrity of the entire process.
The group pointed out that it was crucial to remember that these investigations are not about personalities or political affiliations: "We are concerned with the rule of law and ensuring that each person, regardless of their status or influence, is accountable for what they have done."
Moreover, the group criticized insinuations that the accusations are timed suspiciously and questioned the courage of victims who came forward.
"We urge Senator Marcos and all those who share similar sentiments to refrain from making such insensitive and unsubstantiated claims," it said.
Caritas also reiterated its call to Congress, particularly the Senate to remain steadfast in its pursuit of "truth and justice."
“We also urge all Filipinos to stand together in upholding the dignity of every human person and ensuring that the scales of justice tip in favor of the vulnerable and the voiceless, not the powerful and the privileged,” it added.
