The House of Representatives arts body honored nine up-and-coming artists during the inaugural Celebrating Rising Excellence in Artistic Talent and Expression (CREATE) Awards 2024.
Spearheaded by the lower chamber’s Arts, Culture, and Creative Industries Bloc (ACCIB), the CREATE awards celebrated the artistic achievements of artists 35 years old and below during the culmination of the National Arts Month celebration last February.
House Speaker Ferdinand Romualdez, who led the conferment of awards, said that artists are “the bearers of our cultural legacy and the architects of our collective future”.
“[Their] creativity ignites innovation, drives social progress, and strengthens the fabric of our national identity,” he added.
As indicated in Republic Act (RA) No. 11904, or the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act, nine domains of the Philippine creative industries were feted during the event.
The awardees include Vahn Leinard Pascual for audiovisual media, Maria Jihan Sangil for digital interactive media, Danielle Anne De Leon for creative services, Adam Pereyna for design, Emmanuel Jayson Bolata for publishing and printed media, Shaira Rica Avelino Opsimar for performing arts, Lemuel Blanco for visual arts, Don Patrick Baldosano for traditional cultural expressions, and Stephen John Pamorada for cultural sites.
Romualdez was also bestowed with the CREATE Award given his "wholehearted support for artists and endeavors to nurture creative excellence", as cited by ACCIB lead convenor and Pangasinan 4th district Rep. Christopher “Toff” De Venecia.
De Venecia said each awardee was presented with a uniquely crafted trophy made by sculptor Angelico "Jik" Villanueva, a copy of the House resolution commending them for winning the first-ever CREATE Awards, and a cash prize.
“The awards signify a collective commitment to nurturing a dynamic artistic community in the Philippines and honoring artists for their positive impacts on communities and the country in general,” the young lawmaker explained.
De Venecia, who is chairperson of the Special Committee on Creative Industries, noted that the CREATE Awards is a landmark initiative that “not only recognizes artistic excellence but also highlights the pivotal role of young emerging artists in shaping the creative and cultural narrative of the nation”.
The Speaker, meanwhile, hopes that the awards will serve as a beacon of inspiration that will encourage young artists to “continue their noble pursuit of creative excellence and societal transformation”.
