66 rebel returnees receive gov't cash aid

BUTUAN CITY – Sixty-six former New People’s Army fighters in the Caraga region received cash assistance from the government in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, on Wednesday, March 6.

Recipients received a total of P5.3 million from the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin C. Abalos Jr., Surigao del Sur Gov. Alexander Pimentel, Police Regional Office-13 Director Police Brig. Gen. Kirby John B. Kraft, 401st Infantry (Unite N’ Fight) Brigade commanding general Brig. Gen. Francisco F. Lorenzo Jr., and Department of Social Welfare and Development Assistant Regional Director Tristan C. Telen led the handover.

Recipients also received separate assistance totaling  P660,000 from the Departments of Social Welfare and Development, Health, Agriculture, and Labor and Employment, and Technical Skills Education and Development Authority.

Abalos, guest of honor and speaker, cited the ECLIP in his message as among the peace and development programs of the government that has given life-changing opportunities to rebel returnees.

“Hangad ng gobyerno natin na magkaroon ng kapayapaan at magkaroon ng pagkakaisa sa ating bansa, kasama ang ating mga partner-agencies (The government seeks peace and unity in the country with our partner-agencies),” Abalos said.

Abalos witnessed the turnover of firearms and oath of allegiance of the rebel returnees to the government.

“Since the implementation of ECLIP, a new and better life awaits these rebel returnees as the national government agencies have worked closely to ensure that they are fully reintegrated back into society and they and their families have access to different services such as livelihood, education and training, and employment towards brighter ‘Bagong Pilipinas,’” PRO 13-Regional Public Information Office (RPIO) chief Police Major Jennifer S. Ometer said.
