The chairman of the House Special Committee on West Philippine Sea (WPS) has called on government to begin treating the protection of the country’s interests at-sea as a major concern like education and health during the crafting of the national budget.
“It’s about time that the government recalibrates the allocation of funds to include the necessary resources to protect our [WPS]," Mandaluyong City lone district Rep. Neptali "Boyet" Gonzales II said in a press conference Wednesday, March 6.
Gonzales said that by now, the government should be well aware of the requirements for protecting the WPS, which include the need for ships, helicopters, additional support Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) support, and other essential resources.
"It’s about time [that] when we do the budget, the national government includes this as a major concern...Not only education, not only health, but also the protection of what is supposed to be ours," he stressed.
The ranking solon made these remarks amid recent aggressive actions by the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) in the WPS and Benham Rise or Philippine Rise. Both are within the country’s 200-nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The House of Representatives is also roughly five months away from discussing the 2025 national budget.
Gonzales underscored the importance of planning ahead for the upcoming budget cycle, as he noted that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) will soon issue a budget call for 2025.
