The sun is out!: FDA explains which sunscreens will protect skin from intense UV rays
As the sun begins its radiant reign over the sky, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a timely reminder to sunbathers and beachgoers alike on Thursday, March 7: "safeguard your skin" against the scorching embrace of UV rays with the indispensable shield of sunscreen.

Recognizing the importance of precautions, the FDA promotes the proactive use of "sunscreen" as a "frontline defense" against the sun's relentless assault.
However, it is not enough to apply any old lotion; understanding the different levels of sunscreen efficacy is essential.
Understanding sunscreens
Sunscreen, available in various forms such as lotions, creams, gels, and sprays, contains active ingredients designed to either reflect or absorb UV radiation.
The FDA said that these products shield against two types of UV rays: UVA, which penetrates deep into the skin, and UVB, which primarily affects the outermost layer, causing sunburn.

However, not all sunscreens are created equal.
The FDA emphasized the importance of examining labels for crucial indicators like Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and Broad-Spectrum claims, which ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.
While SPF indicates the level of protection against sunburn, the agency explained that a broad-spectrum designation signifies the sunscreen's ability to combat a broader range of UV rays.
Despite the array of sunscreens available, the agency highlighted that it's crucial to acknowledge their limitations and that no product can offer absolute protection against UV radiation.
Regarding this, the FDA advised supplementing “sunscreen use” with additional precautions such as wearing protective clothing, donning hats and sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak sunlight hours.
In essence, the FDA's message is clear: embrace the sun's warmth, but do so “responsibly.”
By arming oneself with knowledge, reading labels diligently, and employing a holistic approach to sun safety, one can enjoy the summer glow without fear of its consequences.
It highlighted that as the mercury rises and the allure of outdoor adventures calls out, remember that “sunscreen isn't just a summertime accessory; it's your shield against the sun's silent sting.”
